Supporting Young People Experiencing Parental Conflict

Your Direction Workshops with Kent County Council and Medway Council

Family life can be complicated. For young people aged 12-17, navigating parental conflict or life after parents have separated can feel overwhelming. Recognising this, Kent County Council and Medway Council are partnering with Your Direction to deliver workshops designed specifically to support young people through these challenging times.

Running in February, these workshops offer a safe, supportive space for young people to meet others their own age who are experiencing similar challenges. By sharing stories, learning practical skills, and connecting with peers, participants can begin to feel less alone and more confident in navigating their own family situations.

What is Your Direction?

Your Direction is a non-judgemental, fully safeguarded online workshop dedicated to empowering young people to overcome personal challenges and build positive futures. With a focus on practical guidance and emotional support, Your Direction workshops are safe, engaging, and highly interactive. They provide young people with the tools to make constructive decisions, communicate effectively, and improve their overall wellbeing.

What Happens in the Workshops?

The February workshops are designed around the real experiences of young people, giving participants the chance to:

  • Hear real life stories from other young people who have successfully navigated parental conflict or parental separation.
  • Share experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Learn 10 life-changing skills that help manage emotions, make confident decisions, and communicate effectively with family and friends.

Skills such as active listening, problem-solving, and self-advocacy can have a lasting impact, helping young people find their own way through difficult family dynamics.

Why Join a Your Direction Workshop?

There are numerous benefits to participating:

  • Improved wellbeing: Young people report feeling more supported, understood, and able to cope with challenges in a positive way. After completing the workshops, almost 9 in 10 participants reported moderate to high wellbeing, compared to just over half before.
  • Better communication with parents: 9 out of 10 young people who attend Your Direction workshops say they have more constructive conversations with their parents afterward.
  • Peer support: Meeting others in a similar situation reduces feelings of isolation and provides a platform to share experiences.
  • Empowerment: Workshops build confidence and resilience, giving young people the tools to navigate parental conflict and other challenges in a healthy way.
