This might be the first time you’ve really thought about divorce or what it means legally. You might be imagining dramatic court scenes from TV, but for most people, a legal divorce doesn’t involve going to court. Parents usually work with a mediator or family lawyer to sort out arrangements and financial matters.
This article gives tips to help you understand the legal process and links to good sources of information about the process. If you’re worried, talk to your parents and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Are you tired of arguments at home? Noticing how you react when there’s a problem is a good first step in reducing conflict. Are you a rhino who charges in or a hedgehog who doesn’t say anything? Use this quiz to work out your reaction style then learn more effective ways to solve problems.
Your parents’ breakup might be bringing a lot of changes – and it’s okay if you feel angry, sad, or unsure about how to talk to them. You might want to protect them or avoid being a burden, but your parents do want to hear from you. They can’t always guess how you’re feeling, so it helps if you start the conversation.
This handout – written by young people for parents – can make that easier. You can send them the link or download it to share.
